What do we mean by a level playing field? 

Every website is made in a similar way, they all use a website address, which is made up from words, letters and numbers, and every website requires hosting on a server. 

The big question every business owner is looking for the answer to: How can get an advantage for your website?

First, there are some very basic points to consider.

1. Where are your customers based?

Setting up of a website to service your customers is important to consider...

As an example, let's look at some domain name country based extensions:

  • United Kingdom is .uk
  • America is .com
  • Europe is .eu

It's reasonable to say that it's probably a good idea to use the country your chosen market is in domain's extension, as this will show your customers that you are providing your service in their country.

2. Use as short a domain as possible, try to show your brand name or products you are selling within the domain name.

Here are some .uk domain name examples:

  • Our domain: websitedesigns.org.uk, we registered the best domain available and this clearly shows what we offer i.e. website design UK.
  • Another example it's a made up domain: thecandleshop.co.uk this shows that they sell candles, and they sell to the UK.

3. Hosting your website.

We believe that you should host your website on a hosting/server located within the country or a country close to where you are offering your services, as this cutouts any distance lag which may slow down your website loading, for example, if your website is hosted in the US and your market is in the UK, your website has to travel thousands of miles to show in the UK, if your website is hosted in the UK or Europe, the distance is much shorter. There are ways to help your website load faster (CDN), but if your website is hosted in another country, but depending on the technology/platform your website is designed on and using, parts of your website may load faster, but the slower part will hold up the website until it is fully loaded, so your website content may lag... To understand the relevance of this, think about your own experiences when searching the Internet, if you are visiting a website that takes 10 seconds to load each page, how long before you move on from it, as visitors today have little patience? Personally, I always recommend hosting your website close to the country you are marketing to.

4. SEO & Marketing.

This topic is one of the most over used and hyped terms used on the Internet today. Even I receive hundreds of marketing emails every year offering expert SEO services, the emails usually use a free gmail or yahoo or even use a fake email address, they offer SEO services, with no credibility, no examples, no references, no reviews, if they are really experts in marketing, if they are failing to market their own businesses properly, how can they possibly help you? These spam emails are sent out in the bucket load, to every email they can make up, even to emails that don't exist.

So, what does SEO and marketing mean for websites?

First off, a website should always be designed for the audience in mind, including the images used, the words written on the page, linking words, strangely, and what these so called experts don't tell you is, if you do this right from the start, you may never need to apply SEO or marketing, maybe some tweaks, but nothing much. Just understand that the search engines and website visitors are very good at picking up on quality and thus presenting results to search engine visitors, all the websites that have great answers to all the questions everyone is asking, so the better you start your website off, the better it will do long term.
